Philippine Animation is not an industry but an idea. It is an idea that is waiting to become a concept. A concept that yearns to capture the imagination of a generation. A generation that is vibrant, fearless and bold.

These are young men and women who are valiantly creative and sincerely grounded to understand the nature, potentials and limitations of Philippine Animation. They are not afraid to uplift the stature of their craft and transform it into a dynamic, nurturing and self-sustaining model from which an industry will be born.

Philippine Animation is an idea. An idea we believe in, an idea we will fight for and an idea that we deserve. This is not a plea of reckless idealism. Rather, this is a vision of practical optimism.

True, my generation is destined not to see the eloquence that is a birth of an industry and with fondness I accept this unfortunate fate. But to those who are the vanguards of this impending future from which legends are forged. To them, this idea is a seed that hopes to grow.

For we are but caretakers of this grand vision,

A legacy that is not of words but of heartfelt actions,

This is the true Art and Science of Philippine Animation

I hope that more schools and more private groups will have the courage to explore original content development and management in animation. Through original content, we will be able to slowly build a more viable, genuine  and competitive animation industry and market.

The Character Design Industry is a booming market in some countries. In fact, in Korea, there is a festival tailor made for Character Designers and their unique and original creations. The Character Design Industry is a booming market in some countries.  In fact, in Korea, there is a festival tailor made for Character Designers and their unique and original creations. Eventually, the popularity of these characters enact their own spin-offs in Manghwas as well as animated series, features and fashion.
Hello Kitty and Astro Boy are good examples of original designs that were marketed across multimedia boundaries.  From mangas, animated series, movies, theme parks, clothing and other related avenues.  In other words, these characters are creating their own subcultures not only in Japan but in other countries as well.

In the United States, Iconic Character Designs are often within the realm of food products.  In a study conducted by an independent entity, it was discovered that the M & M characters command a larger brand recall compared to Mickey Mouse and Snoopy.

A huge impact was made when Cereal Companies joined the Character Design Band Wagon.  One of the iconic advertising firms, Leo Burnett, created  the Jolly Green Giant, Snap-Crackle-Pop, Tony the Tiger and The Pillsbury Doughboy to name a few.

Character Design is both an art and a science.  It requires a lot of creative and technical training that are often based on taste, style and pulse.  A good designer is a good listener.  He or she listens to the need of the client andcreates an appropriate solution for it based on his or her training.

To be honest, often, those who are used to just copying other images are usually poor in creating unique and original designs.  No matter how much they argue about, still, the images they put forward are usually characters made up of different parts. This is the reason why it is important to have a solid foundation first in originality before doing those outsourcing skills. Or else, you might find yourself just unknowingly copying parts of characters that you copies several times in your mind.

Character Design is hard but rewarding at the same time. What is important is that you retain that ability to listen to needs of your clients and run away with a brilliant design. Remember that your client is not your enemy but the source of valuable information. A good designer does not destroy the source but works with using innovation or invention as the weapon of choice.

Kor-Phil IT - 2nd Batch - 3D Animation Pre-Production : Day 13 to Day 14

May 5th, 2009

13 and 14, reminds me of an anecdote. A wise man is teaching his son to change a string of his guitar. He tells his son to make sure that the string is not too rigid or else it will break.  But if the string is not properly fastened, it will not play. What is needed is too find the right tension for the string for it to make the correct sound.

Transition is at hand, as the 2nd batch works for the storyboard and the assumed dialog track, moments tend to be fleeting for me.  Here we go again. The need to let go and wish the batch well. I always tell myself not to get “attached”. I hate it when the closing days of my pre-production is eating my concerns like pan cakes. Nevertheless, I always have this critical optimism inside my pocket with the need to give them prayers and adventures.  And as I culminate that final days of my experiments and tour of duty at Kor-Phil, I know it was worth it.

One of my students gave me a delightful design.  Group 1 found the gift of communication and Group 2 never falters in their need to push the creative envelope. And of course, the lone woman from Urdaneta keeps on surprising the oracles.  (lol)

cheers

Lunch time when my students invited me to have a refreshing lunch. I was amused by the idea that we were going to eat ” Ginataang Kalabaw and Ginataang Tilapia”. The Whimsical lunch reminds me of that French Court Yard. And as we went through lunch, specially prepared by my student Chad, I realized that this was the very thing that I was yearning for. May 5th, 2009

I always have this fond recreation of what Animation Paraiso is. I always project the concept in a concrete form situated in a French Court Yard under an old tree where individuals who are passionate about animation constantly talk about its form and its function while having coffee or tea with freshly baked Croissants.  In spirit, I yearn for it.

This was the court yard, this was the old tree and this was the  freshly baked croissant.

We talked about animation and our needs to be animated. We covered life as animation aspirants and professionals. It was a heartfelt old fashion lunch that I felt defined why we we all loved animation. No gimmicks, no pretensions and no walls to topple.  Just people, not teacher and students, we were animation colleagues.

I realized that I will remember that moment for the rest of my life.  Specially the Ginataang Kalabaw with a smile of course.

Cheers

Kor-Phil IT - 2nd Batch - 3D Animation Pre-Production : Day 09 to Day 12.

May 5th, 2009

The lectures end here… but the intensive evaluations begin.  Again, I have mix feelings with regards to what transpired from Day 09 up to Day 12.  The more I engage this 2nd batch, the more I realize the value of teaching 3D traditional to students who are moving towards 3D Animation.

I feel that the old method does not work anymore.  Students who are passionate about 2D animation should learn 2D traditional and students who are passionate about 3D animation should learn 3D traditional.  It is now clear for me that the notion that the gap between 2D animation and 3D animation is widening is inherently true and imaginable.

In the existing market, 2D animation outputs are slowly retreating behind the parameters of Art House Animated Features while 3D animation outputs are moving towards Mainstream Blockbuster Animated Features.   I see this as the sign of the times as more and more people coming from the contemporary generation are more interested in real time animation.

Yet there is a need to further confirm these findings.  My tour of duty in Kor-Phil is so valuable in determining what works and what does not work. Perhaps,  my engagement with students coming from different walks of life provided me this essential insight on how to go about teaching animation pre-production.

This present batch is moving forward, though gradually in its pacing. What I see so valuable in this collective is its willingness to grow.  There are bumps along the way and this is natural.  There are times that group 1 is ahead in the development then suddenly group 2  catches up and surprises us with their designs.  What I see is not competition but the willingness again to push the creative potential or potentials.

I feel that they are on the right track despite of the minor things that are often self-inflicted in my opinion.  But the persistent need to move on is gradually penetrating their bones and hope this will be not just a hobbit but a commitment.

The comet is coming and tomorrow will just fade away, that is the way I see the urgency of any project I handled.  And the way I see  it, batch 2 is catching up and the notion that Filipinos are good in animation is a farce.  Filipinos are not just good, Filipinos are brilliant in the field of original content animation.  The only thing that we need to do is to have the will to turn away from devices that  make us stupid like animation outsourcing.

Day 09 up to Day 12, original content animation is real.  Hope is not a myth.

Kor-Phil IT - 2nd Batch - 3D Animation Pre-Production : Day 07 to Day 08

April 2nd, 2009

Mixed feelings about this batch right now.  Officially, all constructions ends.  Some are getting it while others remain in their personal obstacles.  The inclusion of new students is an added surprise for the whole dynamics. After several weeks of charging towards the identified goal, the students are improving, though, the improvements tend to be uneven.

Discussions with regards to the Animation Bible is moderately satisfying.  I feel that the more we discuss about the projects, the more we are able to understand it.  I decided to augment the bible with a more friendly method of outline development using the movement method in animation deployment.

My past experience taught me that The Beat Outline Method is not so effective in terms of deployment with regards to material deconstruction and construction given the situation.  Probably, the movement method will be more effective in this case.

Mixed emotions… how do I say this, I am happy that the students are doing well considering the magnitude of the learning.  But, it is understandable that the process is slow. I only hope that we will gain the needed speed as we go along with the development of their projects.

cheers

Editing An Existing Material : Group 1 - Ushu Star : Outline Evaluation /

April 2nd, 2009

Again, this is a surprise for me, it seems that group 2 is moving towards the beat outline method for animation while group 1 is moving towards the movements method for animation. As we discussed before, the movements method has 9 distinct parts.  When dealing with animated shorts, the application of this method is liberal, as long as you are aware of the conflict spine the supports it.

1. turning point in Group 1 outline projects a community that has a problem. And the remedy or solution for this problem are the fruits of a magical tree.  But the road that leads to the tree is dangerous.  Therefore, the community calls upon its citizen to help the community by embarking on such a perilous journey.  In this case, 7 characters take on the challenge with no intention to work together at first.

2. Obstacle 1 pertains to the need to cross a vast frozen river. The 7 characters work together to cross the river.

3. Obstacle 2  pertains to the killer mushrooms from which again they work together in order to overcome such obstacle.

4. Obstacle 3 pertains to a great wolf, the guardian of the tree, they work together in order to overcome such obstacle.

5. Complication pertains to a twist. As they begin to gather the fruits of the tree,  The roots of tree  begin to attack them.  The wolf recovers at the same time. Increasing the danger.

6. Climax pertains to, once more, working together, escaping from the jaws of death with the needed fruits.

7. Resolution is the victory of the 7 characters in acquiring the fruits of the magical tree. And the community celebrating.

=======
No need to put the final push in act three because the climax is sufficient enough to stand on its on given that this is a short.  Furthermore, the outline started in the mid-stream of the story, which is the problem or in the premise construct, the dramatic problem.

In this construct, there are 7 movements ( 3 movements coming from the obstacle with a singular dramatic point which connects the three).  In story editing, the obstacle is technically one movement or event because no matter how much you sub-divide, it still retain  a single dramatic emotional point.  But, some argue that it should be considered autonomous sud-divisions. Nevertheless, the obstacle always follow the rule of three.

The conflict spine, it terms of acknowledgment of the problem covers the turning point.  The definition of the problem covers obstacle 1, obstacle 2, obstacle 3, and complication.  The resolution of the conflict covers the climax and the resolution.  Thus, the outline is complete, strong and focused.

what I like about this method is that one can easily modify it into a animated feature by adding the first act and including a different event for the final push, one can readily make this story a full-animated feature with a given target audience… children.
